After poverty, menstruation in India gets an Oscar


For Guneet Monga, who produced Bollywood movies like The Lunchbox, Zubaan, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Masaan, selecting the subject of menstruation, as treated in hinterland India, has proved to be gold mine.  Her documentary film, Period. End of Sentence, directed by Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi has won an Oscar under the category of Documentary Short Subject.

The 20-minute film  talks about the taboo associated with menstruation in Hapur village near Delhi. It dwells on how denying access to sanitary pads resulted in health issues in women and turned girls into school dropouts when reach puberty. It shows how use of sanitary pads paved the way for a silent revolution, empowering the women in the process.
