The Congress Party has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The most prominent names on the list are of Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rahul Gandhi (Amethi). But there is no mention of Priyanka Gandhi yet.
The list, released late Thursday, has put the speculations that Sonia Gandhi may retire from active politics to rest. It was widely discussed in the media that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may step into her shoes, contesting from Rae Bareli, given the health condition of the senior Gandhi.
Of the 15 candidates on the list, 11 are for the constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Prominent among them are Salman Khurshid, RPN Singh, and Jitin Prasada, all were Union ministers in the previous Lok Sabha.
Hence the question, ‘will she, won’t she’ will continue about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into electoral politics for now. It may be recalled that the media went berserk when she was named the General Secretary of Congress Party and given the charge of the eastern Uttar Pradesh acouple of months back. A few TV commentators were even suggesting that she should be pitted against Narendra Modi in Varanasi.
The SP-BSP leaders had earlier maintained that the alliance would not field candidates in Rae Bareli and Amethi, the pocket boroughs of Gandhis. But they had not made allowance to more seats for Congress in their alliance for 78 Lok Sabha seats in the state, while offering 3 to the smaller party, RLD.
Now releasing names for 11 seats, has Congress snubbed SP and BSP or is there some mutual understating among all the Opposition parties against the ruling NDA alliance?
