Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir is set to play a new innings in politics as he has formally joined the BJP ahead of the April-May general elections.
The former International player was welcome to the party by Union Ministers and senior party leaders Arun Jaitely and Ravi Shankar Prasad on New Delhi on Friday.
Gautam Gambhir, the 37-year-old former batsman, played a crucial role in helping India win the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup. He has over nine million followers on Twitter and in recent times, he has been commenting on national issues.
“I have contributed to the field of cricket and now hope to do more for the country,” he said after joining the BJP. He also praised the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources, the BJP is expected to field Gambhir in one of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, which go to poll on May 12, 2019.
