Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s comment on Supreme Court’s decision to admit “stolen” documents to review its earlier judgement on Rafale Deal may drag him to face a contempt case.

Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP MP from Delhi, on Friday filed a contempt petition in the top court over the comment.

Rahul Gandhi has been levelling corruption charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the deal to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets. He also has made “chowkidaar chor hai” (the watchman is a thief) his campaign slogan in the Genral Election season.

In December last, the Supreme Court, while adjudicating a plea for investigation into the deal, ruled that there was no impropriety in the deal and hence no need for a probe. Later, the SC admitted a review petition.

On April 10, the apex court had dismissed the government’s objection to consider “stolen” documents submitted by the petitioners. Responding to the court’s decision Rahul Gandhi said “the “Supreme Court has said, chowkidaar chor hai”.

Through former attorney general Mukul Rohatgi, Meenakshi Lekhi stated in her petition that “Gandhi has attributed his personal remarks to the top court and tried to create prejudice”.

The case will come up for hearing on April 15. And a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is set to hear the contempt case.
