Does Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hold an Italian passport? Is she a citizen of her mother’s native land? Is this why she could not contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat?
A legal notice, purportedly sent by one Lt Col Mukul Chauhan to Priyanka, claims she acquired Italian citizenship on her birth in 1972, according to citizenship rules of Italy. And the notice questions if and when she had renounced the Italian citizenship to get an Indian one as required in India.

Congress party’s decision of not fielding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Varanasi must have dampened the spirit of party workers across India. Also it must have left many others, especially the media deeply disappointed for missing the fireworks of a block buster contest. However, the reason for her Priynaka’s no-show remains a mystery.
The fact that different Congress leaders are offering different reasons has only deepened the mystery. The party’s overseas head Sam Pitroda on April 26 said it was Priyanka’s own decision. “She decided that she has several responsibilities. She decided that rather than concentrating on one seat, she should focus on the job she has at hand,” he stated.
At the same time, another Congress leader Rajiv Shukla said that Priyanka was in fact willing to contest, but party’s high command and president Rahul Gandhi decided otherwise.
Former finance minister P Chidambaram too has countered the media with this retort: “Did she tell you she is going to contest and then she backed off? You are assuming she was going to contest.”
Incidentally, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra herself had triggered the speculation, displaying her readiness to fight against PM Narendra Modi on several occasions. In March, during her first campaign outing itself in Uttar Pradesh, she retorted “Why not Varanasi?”, when asked if she was contesting from Lucknow.
Then on, she repeatedly referred to Varanasi as her possible poll battle. But on April 25, 3 days before the deadline for filing nomination, the Congress named Ajay Rai as candidate.
Now look at this “legal notice” which was never taken up by the mainstream media. Could this be the real reason for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s retreat from the battle?
