Creating a meme of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Benerjee and posting it on facebook has landed a BJP youth leader in police custody. The Howrah Cyber Crime Branch has arrested Priyanka Sharma, the district convener of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) for superimposing Mamata Banerjee’s face on Priyanka Chopra in her MET Gala 2019 costume (as shown in the image) and sharing the morphed image on the social media platform.
On May 10, Trinamool Congress leader Vibhas Hazra had earlier filed complaint with the Cyber Crime branch alleging that sharing the photoshopped picture of the chief minister of the state was a grave crime, insult to her.
Ironically, Mamata Banerjee and other opposition leaders (not to speak of ‘liberals’) train the “intolerant” barb against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. However, social media is awash with derogatory memes on Modi at any given time. However, none seems to be arrested for creating such memes.
Incidentally, this is not the first time sharing a humorous take on Mamata Banerjee has put the person in trouble. In 2012, a Chemistry professor from Jadhavpur University was put behind bars for forwarding a cartoon on her by email. And over time, she seems to have grown more intolerant.
Recently, Prime Minister Modi had revealed that Mamata Banerjee did not take his call, when he wanted to review the situation in West Bengal, post cyclone Fani. The chief minister retorted that she wouldn’t consider Modi as country’s prime minister.
Three days ago, she said that she felt like giving Modi a tight slap (of democracy). In February last, she sat on a sit out protest with top police officers against the Central Bureau of Investigation, which was probing mega scam of Sardha chit fund.
Does Mamata Banerjee tend to forget that West Bengal is bound in a federal structure?
