Foreign Secretary is Vijay Gokhale has said Indian forces conducted an attack on the terror training facility at Balakot to prevent future terror attacks in India. He said Jaish-e-Mohammed led by Masood Azhar has been conducting terror attacks on Indian targets, including the Parliament attack 2001 and Patankot army base in 2016.
Mr Gokhale said that although India asked Pakistan to reign in the terrorists, that country did nothing.
He said intelligence reports indicate that Jaish-e-Mohammed is planning more fidayeen attacks (after the one in Pulwama killing 40 CRPF jawans on Feb 14) in several places in India. To prevent them, it was necessary to carry out this ‘non-military’ attack on a facility owned by Maulana Yusuf Azhar, brother-in-law of Masood Azhar, as a number of fidayeen terrorists were being trained there, he said.
