The new Andhra Pradesh chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, who assumed office a week ago, has decided to appoint five deputy chief ministers (DCMs) and 25 cabinet ministers to the 175-member strong state assembly.

The five DCMs will be selected from five different sections of the society, namely SCs, STs, OBCs, minorities, and the Kapu community, he told the media.

With this, Andhra Pradesh would create a new record of having five DCMs in a state in India. Uttar Pradesh, with 403 members in the assembly, has two DCMs since 2017.

While critics call the move as political populism, Jagan has claimed it as a way to fulfil aspirations of all communities. The DCMs and ministers are scheduled to take oath on Saturday.

Jagan’s party YSR Congress won 151 seats in the Assembly polls last month. The party also won 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats.
