Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is currently on a three-day Ganga Yatra, sailing on Ganga River on motorboat, as part of her election campaign.

The 100-km Yatra began in Prayagraj on Monday, and will conclude in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

On the way, she is stopping at several places along the coast of Ganga River to address rallies. Visiting temples are also part of her itinerary. She is also holding informal meetings on the boat, which is called “Naav pe charcha” or discussion onboard of the boat.

Before commencing the campaign Yatra, Priyanka stayed overnight at Swaraj Bhawan, her ancestral home. She tweeted the photograph of a room of the house, where her grandmother Indira Gandhi was born in 1917.

Another photograph put out by the Congress to link Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to Indira Gandhi was that of their respective visits to the Bade Hanuman Temple. Indira Gandhi had visited the temple in 1979, and Priyanka, 40 years later on March 18, 2019. The Congress tweeted the two photographs, clicked while they were offering flowers to a sleeping Hanuman. The Hindi tweet read: Traditions and rituals never change.

With this the Congress wishes to send out twin messages that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is the new Indira Gandhi and she is here to take on Narendra Modi. Moreover, the party needs to find some ground in Uttar Pradesh, the largest state of India that sends 80 lawmakers to Parliament. Currently only two of them are with the Congress.

It is amusing to note that Congress think tank has constructed her Ganga Yatra campaign on borrowed themes. The ‘Ganga Ma Ki beti’ moniker is a reminder of the statement ‘Ma Ganga ne mujko bulaya’ made by Narendra Modi in his victory speech at Varanasi in 2014. Her ‘Naav pe charcha’ is just a copy of BJP’s ‘Chai pe Charcha’ in 2014.

Maybe it was deliberately done to highlight the positioning to show that the two-pronged strategy of the Congress is to resurrect Indira Gandhi in Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and pit her right against Narendra Modi.

The truth is much water has flown in the mighty Ganga River since Indira Gandhi’s demise. Will the legacy pitch resonate with people, especially those who were born after her death?

Polls 2019: AAP succeeds in sealing pact with Congress

Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal

Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have reportedly come together to fight the seven Lok Sabah seats in Delhi. The two parties entered into an agreement on Saturday, a week after Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit ruled out any pact with the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP.

Both the parties will contest three seats each and field a joint candidate in the seventh seat. Currently, all the seats are held by the BJP.

The development came after Congress’ Delhi in-charge PC Chacko’s intervention. It is also reported that Congress had sought the opinion of party workers about the alliance with AAP to which the majority of them responded positively.

Earlier, AAP had repeatedly requested the Congress for alliance ‘to defeat the BJP’. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had gone public with his frustration saying he was tired of waiting for Congress’s response. This had prompted a build up of pressure on the Congress as displayed on media that Congress’s reluctance to tie up with APP would only help the BJP.

However, the alliance between the two parties is limited to Delhi alone, the sources said.
