The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on April 29 arrested a youth from Kerala on charges of “conspiring to commit a terrorist act”.
Riyas Aboobacker, a resident of Palakkad, had been detained for questioning after the raids on the residences of three ISIS suspects in the Kasrgod district on April 28. During interrogation, he has reportedly admitted that he wanted to carry out terrorist attacks in the state.
According to NIA, Riyas Aboobacker has revealed that he had been watching the videos of Zahran Hashim, the mastermind behind the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka on April 21. The 29-years-old also admitted to have followed the speeches of Zakir Naik, the Peace TV famed Islamic preacher from India living in exile.
Riyas Aboobacker is also found to be in touch with absconding ISIS suspect Abdul Rashid Abdulla and Abdul Khayoom, who is believed to have gone to Syria
In July 2016, NIA had registered a case after 15 youth from Kasrgod district reported missing. While one of them was believed to have joined ISIS in Syria, 14 others reportedly migrated to Afghanistan.
The April 21 NIA raids came after the agency received inputs that some youth are in touch with those absconding extremists.
