Lok Sabha Polls: Sandalwood superstars back Sumalatha in Mandya

Sumalatha planked by Yash and Darshan

Sumalatha Ambareesh, wife of former Congress leader and Parliamentarian late Ambareesh, announced her candidacy on Monday for the Mandya Lok Sabha seat in the southern Karnataka in the upcoming elections.

She said she would fight the poll as an Independent candidate. The Congress did not offer her the seat, once held by her deceased husband, as it has been given to its alliance partner JDS in their poll pact.

However, Sumalatha seems to be garnering a lot of support as evident by the presence of two superstars of Kananda films.

In the press meet called to make the announcement, she was planked by Yash and Darshan, who vowed that they would work for her as children do for their mother, helping her fight the election.

With the entry of Yash and Darshan into the campaign trail, the scene in the Mandya constituency is set to get a lot more colourful as Sumalatha will be fitted against chief minister Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumar, who himself is the hero of a few big budget films.

It’s Sumalatha vs Nikhil in Mandya?

Sumalatha Ambareesh and Nikhil Kumaraswamy

The Mandya Lok Sabha constituency in southern Karnataka is all set to witness a direct fight between chief minister Kumarswamy’s son Nikhil Kumarswamy and Rebel Star late Ambreesh’s  wife Sumalatha as the BJP has reportedly decided not to field its candidate against the latter.

After the Congress-JDS alliance left the seat to JDS, Sumalatha has decided to contest as an Independent. She has been already riding on a sympathy wave, garnering support from all quarters cutting across party lines, on account of her husband’s death in November last.

Reports said the BJP, with little chance to win the seat, wants to ensure JDS candidate’s defeat by throwing its weight behind Sumalatha Ambareesh.

At the same time, JDS supremo Deve Gowda on Thursday launched his grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy with an emotional pitch in Mandya.

He said Nikhil’s entry into politics was necessitated by the health condition of his father and chief minister HD Kumaraswamy. “When my son had open heart surgery for the second time, my grandson was in the film industry. Looking at the health condition of his father Nikhil decided to help him and serve the party,” Deve Gowda said.

On Wednesday, the octogenarian leader had shed tears while launching his other grandson Prajwal in Hassan Lok Sabha, setting off a series of sarcastic jokes on social media platforms.
