Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led “Main Be Chowkidar” (Me too watchman) campaign on social media, Akbaruddin Owaisi, MLA from Telangana and Brother of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said on Monday that he would give a cap in Modi’s hand and put a whistle around his neck if Modi wanted to be a watchman.

Addressing a campaign rally Hyderabad ahead of the April-May Lok Sabah polls, Akbaruddin Owaisi said, “Sometimes he becomes a tea seller, other times an ascetic… When he said he is a tea seller, I said I would supply a teapot and tea leaves and now if he really wants to be a watchman, I promise to put a cap in his head and a whistle around his neck.”

Akbaruddin Owaisi represents the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party in the Telangana assembly.

Rahul Gandhi had coined the slogan “chowkidaar chor hai” (watchman is a thief) while accusing Modi of corruption in the Rafale deal. On March 16, PM Modi prefixed ‘chowkidaar’ to his Twitter handle in a counter step that proved hugely successful as millions of twitter handles, including that of Union ministers and other prominent people, appeared with the prefix, chowkidaar’.

Akbaruddin Owaisi demanded that Narendra Modi should mention ‘Chowkidar’ in his Aadhaar card and passport as well.

Akbaruddin Owaisi made it to headlines some years ago when a video of his speech went viral.  In teh video, he threw a challenge to Indian establishment to withdraw police protection for 15 minutes to see the strength of 25 crore Muslims vis-à-vis 100 crore Hindus.

Mamata dares Narendra Modi, Amit Shah for a Mantra duel

Flashing a Hindu card once again ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha elections, West Bengal chief minister and the Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah to hold a competition with her on puja mantras.

Addressing a gathering on Tuesday she said “Puja does not only mean sporting a tilak”.

Her statement seems to be an oblique reference to the imagery of the two BJP stalwarts from the recently concluded Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and from the launch of Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor in Varanasi. Both Modi and Shah were captured while performing pujas and sporting religious symbols including tilak on these occasions.

She mocked the Modi government for not building Ram Temple, and claimed her government in West Bengal has constructed a beautiful temple in Ganga Sagar.

“They say Mamata Didi doesn’t let people to do Puja here. Are you (Mod and Shah) doing it? Puja is not done just by sporting tilak. If there is a competition on puja mantras… Modi Babu and Amit Babu, come, let us see who knows more Sanskrit mantras,” she challenged.

Mamata Banerjee was criticised for routinely imposing restrictions on celebrations of Durga Puja, the most important Hindu festival in West Bengal. But ahead of the festival in 2018, she announced a grant of Rs 10,000 each to about 28,000 puja communities spread across the state. The move was interpreted as an attempt to dent the charges of “Muslim appeasement” against her.
