Metropolitan Police of London on Wednesday arrested Indian diamond merchant Nirav Modi and produced him before the Westminster Magistrates’ court.
A statement released by the police said: “Nirav Deepak Modi, 48 (Date of Birth 24.02.71), was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities on Tuesday in Holborn. He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday”.
The fugitive businessman reportedly pleaded for bail offering 500,000 pounds. But the court denied an immediate bail and ordered him to be lodged in custody till March 29.
The arrest comes on the day when the Enforcement Directorate in India gets PMLA court permission to action assets of Nirav Modi, comprising 173 paintings and 11 cars. The PMLA court also issued a nonbailable warrant against his wife, Ami Modi.
