Are the opponents of Sumalatha Ambareesh, an Independent candidate from Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, planning to launch a social media campaign to defame her and her family ahead of the polling date on April 18? The wife of late Ambareesh made this stunning allegation on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media, Sumalatha said two aides of Ambareesh had been offered money, residential plot in Bengaluru and a foreign trip in lieu of defamatory statement against her family. The aides were told not to fear the consequence after making the statement (on social media) as they would be immediately sent abroad on a trip.
“A senior JDS leader has revealed to me that the campaign would be launched in big way on social media. The staff in my house are being approached and offered Rs 10-15 lakh for badmouthing my family. They are promising foreign trip, site in Bengaluru and what not,” she said.
Sumalatha’s husband, late Ambareesh, who was a super star of Kannada movies, had represented Mandya constituency thrice in Parliament. She is expected to benefit from the huge popularity he enjoyed in the region, though she is pitted against, Nikhil Kumar, the son of chief minister HD Kumarswamy in the poll battle.
Interestingly, her allegation is an eerie reminder of the hoopla created by a “MeToo” tweet against Bengaluru South Lok Sabah candidate Tejasvi Surya. The woman deactivated her Twitter account immediately after putting out a cheating allegation against the 28-year-old BJP leader. But the damage was done as her tweet was re-tweeted multiple times forcing the mainstream media take note it. Eventually, Tejasvi Surya approached the court and secured an injunction that barred media outlets to carry defamatory stories against him.
Are Sumalatha’s opponents trying to do a “Tejasvi Surya” on her?
